❖ Heads up! This article is intended for Program Managers—a role available only on Amplify sites. You may also see this role referred to as Advanced Program Manager; both terms refer to the same user type.

By the end of this article, you will be able to:

  • Identify when to use a hand-raising Opportunity

  • Set up a public and private Opportunity for volunteer vetting

  • Manage approved volunteers using User Groups

When to Use a Hand-Raising Opportunity

Create a hand-raising Opportunity when volunteers must complete additional steps before participating.

Use this option if you need to:

  • Conduct interviews or onboarding

  • Collect paperwork or certifications

  • Require training before participation

  • Build a waitlist of interested volunteers

  • Prepare a volunteer pool for disaster response

  • Confirm volunteer skills align with your Program’s needs

Hand-raising Opportunities allow volunteers to express interest without signing up for a scheduled shift.

What You’ll Need

To set up this process, create the following:

1. A Public Opportunity (Interest Form)

Volunteers respond to this Opportunity to show interest.

Include language that clarifies:

  • They are expressing interest only

  • They must complete your vetting process

  • Approval is required before participation

We recommend selecting the Flexible duration type so volunteers can respond within a set timeframe.

2. A Private Opportunity (Post-Approval)

Use this Opportunity to:

  • Schedule approved volunteers

  • Assign shifts after onboarding or training

Volunteers will not see this Opportunity until they are approved.

3. A User Group

Add approved volunteers to a User Group.

Assign the private Opportunity to this User Group so:

  • Only vetted volunteers can access it

  • Approved volunteers can respond or be scheduled

How it Works

Here are the steps of this process:

  1. Volunteers respond to the public Opportunity to show interest.

    • This does not schedule them for participation.

  2. Review volunteer responses and begin your vetting process.

  3. Approve volunteers who meet your requirements.

  4. Add approved volunteers to the User Group assigned to the private Opportunity.

  5. Schedule volunteers using the private Opportunity.

    • Keep the Opportunity private if you want to schedule volunteers yourself.

    • Assign it to the User Group if volunteers should respond on their own.

The private Opportunity has a lock icon in the top right corner of the card, indicating it's private.
