Heads up! This article is only intended for Sustain Site Managers.

By the end of this article, you will be able to:

  • Decide when to use a Prerequisite to require a training video

  • Create a video-based Prerequisite step-by-step

  • Configure auto-approval to confirm a video was watched

  • Understand how the Prerequisite appears to volunteers

Training Videos as Prerequisites

You can use a Prerequisite to require volunteers to watch a training video before they can participate in an Opportunity.

As part of the Prerequisite, you can include a question that volunteers must answer to confirm they watched the video.

This approach works well for:

  • Safety or compliance training

  • Orientation or onboarding videos

  • “About Us” or mission overview videos

  • Any required instructional content

Getting Started

If you want volunteers to watch a required video before participating in Opportunities posted on your site, you can do so by adding the video to a Prerequisite.

This ensures volunteers review important information before they are considered eligible to participate.

How to Create a Video-Based Prerequisite

  1. Go to Volunteerism > Prerequisites.

  2. Click Add New Prerequisite.

  3. Select the Type and fill out the Create Prerequisite page.

    • We recommend selecting the Dropdown option.

    • This lets you select Auto approve if the correct answer is selected and then select which answer is the correct one for them to choose from. When the volunteer selects the correct answer, they're automatically approved for that Prerequisite. This is great if you plan to ask them a question specific to the video—i.e., a question that can only be answered by watching the video first.

  4. Toggle the button beside Add Content Link to On.

  5. Copy and paste the URL for the video you're attaching to the Prerequisite in the Link URL field.

  6. You can either enter a call to action in the Link Text or the title of the video, e.g., Click here to watch the training video or Volunteering with Us.

  7. Click Create Prerequisite.

The Volunteer Perspective

How this Prerequisite appears to volunteers depends on the permission settings you choose.

From the volunteer’s perspective, the Prerequisite may:

  • Be required before they can view Opportunities, or

  • Allow them to view Opportunities, but require completion before responding

Volunteers will see:

  • A link to the required video

  • A question they must answer to continue

Best Practices

  • Ask a clear, specific question tied directly to the video content

  • Avoid questions that can be guessed without watching the video

  • Use auto-approval to reduce administrative review

  • Keep videos concise to improve completion rates
