Overview

Use Prerequisites to ensure volunteers meet specific requirements before responding to an Opportunity.

Examples include:

  • Sharing training or policy documents

  • Asking qualifying questions

  • Requiring proof of certification

For simple acknowledgments (like agreeing to a policy), use a clickwrap-waiver instead. A clickwrap waiver is a PDF that volunteers simply confirm they’ve read—no signature required.

Prerequisites only apply to Opportunities, not to user accounts. Additionally, prerequisites are universal—they apply to all users, including existing volunteers, until they are marked as completed.

Creating Prerequisites

  1. Go to Volunteerism > Prerequisites.

  2. Click Add New Prerequisite.

  3. Fill out the Create Prerequisite page.

  4. Click Create Prerequisite to finish.

Key fields explained

Field

Description

Status

  • Active: The default status; the Prerequisite is shared publicly.

  • Inactive: Used when ready to deactivate.

Type

  • Dropdown – Create a list of answer options for volunteers to choose from.

  • File Upload – Allow volunteers to upload documents as part of their response.

  • Background Check – Require a background check before volunteers can respond to Opportunities.

  • Waiver – Require a signed waiver. (You’ll need to create the waiver first, then select it from the dropdown.)

    • A Create New Waiver button appears when selected.

Title

The title appears in the volunteer's Prerequisite table, Opportunity form, etc.

Question

Enter a question for the volunteer to answer or instruct them on how to complete the Prerequisite, e.g., "Please sign this waiver," etc.

Auto Approve

To auto-approve Prerequisite responses, select Auto Approve from the dropdown. By default, this is set to No, requiring manual review.

If the Prerequisite uses the Dropdown type, you can specify a correct answer. When a volunteer selects that answer, the system will auto-approve their submission.

Required on registration

Toggle On to require volunteers to answer the Prerequisite during registration on your site.

Hide from registration

Toggle On to hide Prerequisites from volunteers during registration.

Volunteers can still answer Prerequisites in their profile or when responding to Opportunities with them assigned.

Permissions

  • Required to View Any Opportunities: Select this option to have volunteers answer the Prerequisite before they can view any available Opportunities.

  • Required to Respond to Any Opportunities: Select this option to have volunteers answer the Prerequisite before they can respond to any available Opportunities.

Duration

  • User-provided date: Select this option to have volunteers provide an expiration date when they answer the Prerequisite question.

  • 1 or 2 weeks: Use for health-related waivers, e.g., volunteers must sign a waiver confirming they haven't had any signs or symptoms of illness in the last two weeks.

  • 1 or 6 months; 1, 2, or 3 years; First of the year; Forever: These dates reflect when the Prerequisite is answered and added to the volunteer's profile, not the date they're approved.

Add Content Link

Toggle this On to add content to a Prerequisite. Once enabled, the Link URL and Link Text fields appear; perfect for sharing things like your privacy policy or any custom page volunteers should review before answering the Prerequisite.
