❖ Heads up! This article is only intended for Sustain Site Managers.

By the end of this article, you will be able to:

  • Understand how Skills help volunteers find the right Opportunities

  • Decide when to use Default Skills vs. Custom Skills

  • Create and edit Custom Skills on your site

What are Skills?

Skills help connect volunteers with Opportunities that match their strengths and experience.

When volunteers search your site, they can filter Opportunities by:

  • Cause

  • Location

  • Skill

This makes it easier for volunteers to quickly find roles where they can contribute most effectively.

Default Skills vs. Custom Skills

Default Skills

Your site includes a set of Default Skills that are ready to use. These cover many common volunteer roles and are a great starting point.

Custom Skills

If the Default Skills don’t fully reflect the work your volunteers do, you can create Custom Skills.

Use Custom Skills to better align Opportunities with the real-world tasks volunteers will perform.

Examples: When to Add Custom Skills

Use Custom Skills when your Opportunities require specific or specialized abilities.

If

Then

If you have volunteer Opportunities for rebuilding homes...

Add custom Skills like Home Repair, Restoration, or Construction

If you have volunteer Opportunities that involve working with shelter animals...

Add custom Skills like Animal Care, Veterinarian, or Animal Rescue

If you have volunteer Opportunities to work in a food pantry...

Add custom Skills like Cooking, Food Prep, or Food Handling
