❖ Heads up! This article is only intended for Sustain Site Managers.

By the end of this article, you will be able to:

  • Understand the different waiver types available

  • Know when to use Adults and Minors, Adult Only, or Minor Only waivers

  • Attach the correct waiver type to a Prerequisite for each Opportunity

Overview

Waivers help ensure volunteers meet your Prerequisite requirements for each Opportunity. You can require waivers from adults only, minors only, or both. Choosing the right option helps protect your organization while maintaining a smooth and accessible volunteer experience.

Recommended Option: Adults and Minors

In most cases, we recommend using the Adults and Minors waiver type. It’s the most flexible option and works best when Opportunities are open to both adult and minor volunteers.

  • Attach this waiver type to a Prerequisite

  • Ensures all volunteers sign the appropriate waiver before responding

How It Works

When using the Adults and Minors waiver option:

  • Volunteers enter their birthdate before signing

  • The system automatically routes them to the correct waiver

Minors (ages 13–17):

  • Shown the Minor Waiver you uploaded

  • Prompted to enter a parent or guardian’s name and email

  • A co-signature request is sent to the parent or guardian

Adults (18 and older):

  • Directed to the Adult Waiver

  • Requirement is complete once signed

Depending on your site settings, waiver submissions may require manual approval before volunteers can respond to Opportunities.

Other Waiver Types

You can also select Adult Only or Minor Only waiver types. These should be used only when you are certain an Opportunity is limited to a specific age group.

Important considerations:

  • Adult Only: Minors cannot complete the Prerequisite and cannot sign up at all

  • Minor Only: Adults bypass the waiver entirely, resulting in incomplete liability coverage

The Adults and Minors option avoids these issues by automatically directing volunteers based on birthdate.

How to Choose

Use Adult Only or Minor Only waivers when the program scope clearly supports it:

  • Minor Only: Youth-focused programs such as summer camps or teen service initiatives

  • Adult Only: Opportunities involving sensitive topics or activities requiring participants to be 18+

Choose the waiver type that best aligns with your program requirements while maintaining liability protection and a positive volunteer experience.
